The cultural shift of the 1960s was like dark clouds over the land of America for conservatives. It was an opportunity for the youth and people tied by work and society. The situation explained by the author Franz Kafka in the book “Metamorphosis” was similar to the people living in America. In the book, the protagonist gets up realizing that his lower body is starting to change into an insect-like creature but he is constantly worrying that if he is late for work he would be fired. Tired from the American lifestyle the Hippie emerged as the need for the people. Like any good piece of art is open for interpretation so is the Hippie movement; for some an art festival, for some, it was revolting against the lifestyle, and for some, it was a way to oppose the Vietnam War. About the artistic element it promoted a more natural lifestyle and the colors scheme had a sense of warmth to it representing psychedelic emotions. But I believe it’s disrespectful to call any movement just art cause any movement is a design. It was a well-formed idea spread across the youth who were tied down due to rising capitalism and social norms. This was a means to shake the government and its ideals and war, both of which were later lost. Along with this religious and cultural diversity has gained greater acceptance. Sadly like anything capitalism touches is turned into a profit-making opportunity. The Hippie movement also lost its shine when the colors depicting freedom from society were sold in stores. To conclude this I would like to just say that it is an artsy design that changed the ideology and perspective of the world towards life.
